Bindon
Once called Binedon, The place within the hill and then, after the
removal of the monastery it was for a while called Old Bynedon(1297).
Bindon is the massive hill that forms the
chalk cliff at the back of Lulworth cove. Bindon Abbey was established here
and transferred to a site near Wool in 1172. As a result the flat valley
land to the east of Wool is also called Bindon. Bindon Abbey was
dissolved by Henry VIII and only a gatehouse and ruins remain.
The army have operated a tank firing range near Bindon Hill since 1916. A much
greater, adjoining area was added to it during the Second World War forming
the Lulworth Ranges.
