Redcliffe

The cliff
at Redcliffe Through history the iron stained sandstone cliff on the river bank has had a descriptive name. It was Radeclive in 1256 and Redclyffe by 1542.

Ridge Quay lies immediately behind the hill and for a long time was the principal port for the Purbeck clay industry. Stone and cement too were sometimes traded here. These days Ridge and Redcliffe present a forest of masts as they are convenient for pleasure craft based in the sheltered northwest corner of Poole Harbour.
